About This Guide

Thirty days. One growing habit.
A companion for anyone who wants to pray more deeply.

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." — James 4:8 (KJV)

Draw Near is a 30-day companion for anyone who wants to grow deeper in prayer — whether that's a first step or a hundred-and-first. Each day is short enough for a busy morning and substantial enough to stay with you through the afternoon.

Prayer is not a technique to master. It is an instinct God already placed in you. This guide doesn't teach you how to pray so much as it clears the ground so you can. Inspired by David M'Intyre's century-old classic The Hidden Life of Prayer, each entry takes one practice from M'Intyre's vision of the hidden life and brings it into ordinary days — thirty days, one practice at a time.

The guide closes with a Prayer Covenant page — a simple commitment to sign and keep as a marker of where these thirty days began.

What's Inside

Every day, four movements
into the presence of God.

01
Scripture

A passage from the King James Version or World English Bible opens each day. Read it slowly. The rest of the entry grows out of this ground.

02
Reflection

A brief reflection on the day's text and theme — grounded in M'Intyre's teaching, applied to ordinary life. Unhurried. Honest. Enough to sit with.

03
Prayer Prompt

Written to be prayed, not read about. Each prayer prompt is an invitation to speak — not a model to admire from a distance.

04
One Next Step

A single, concrete practice for the day — small enough to do, real enough to matter. Thirty steps toward a lasting habit of dependence on God.

Day 1 · Why We Pray

The Prayer God Placed in You

"As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God."
— Psalm 42:1–2 (WEB)

Long before anyone taught you the words, something in you already knew how to reach for God. That reaching is not a technique to master but an instinct God Himself planted — the same instinct that makes a deer pant for water. We were made for communion with our Maker, and even our stumbling, wordless groans are prayers the Spirit knows how to carry.

Today is simply an invitation to notice that instinct in yourself, and to trust it rather than judge it. It is enough.
