In ancient times, the hem was not decorative. It carried profound meaning — representing authority, identity, and covenant connection. The tassels commanded in Numbers were reminders of God's law. The hem of a king's robe was a symbol of his power. When desperate hands reached for the edge of Jesus's cloak, they were not grasping at fabric. They were reaching for divine authority, healing, and transformation.

Touching the Hem is a 14-day journey through Scripture's garment imagery — from the tassels of Numbers to the white robes of Revelation. Each day moves through one piece of that imagery, grounded in historical context, honest reflection, and the conviction that the God who healed at a touch is still the same God today.

This is a devotional for anyone who has ever reached out in desperation — and anyone who needs to be reminded that reaching is enough.

Day 1

The Hem That Carried Authority

"Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner."
— Numbers 15:38 (ESV)

Before Jesus ever walked through a crowd with a woman reaching for his robe, God had already established that the edge of a garment was sacred ground. The command in Numbers was not about fashion. The tassels — tzitzit — were reminders. Every time the hem moved, every time it brushed against a threshold or a hand, it said: this person belongs to God. These are people under a covenant.

The woman in Mark 5 who pressed through the crowd knew this. She did not reach for Jesus randomly. She reached for the hem deliberately — because she understood what the hem meant. Authority lived there. Covenant lived there. And if the covenant was real, then healing was possible.

We come to Scripture the same way she came to Jesus — reaching past the crowd, past our own doubt, past fourteen days of ordinary life, toward something we cannot quite name but cannot stop needing. The reaching is the act of faith. The hem is always within reach.
